The abolition of the death penalty was a significant subject in parliamentary debates since it started working back in 1821.

Here are presented a few excerpts of the interventions about this matter throughout various parliamentary institutions of the Constitutional Monarchy, the First Portuguese Republic and the Estado Novo dictatorial regime.

The texts are supplemented with hyperlinks to the app of the Assembly of the Republic, “Debates Parlamentares” (Parliamentary Debates), where you can do research, consult and export (as image or text) the records of the meetings of the Portuguese Parliament, from the Cortes Constituintes (Parliament of the Constitutional Monarchy) of 1821-1822 to today.
